Fashion is art, and our body is the canvas. We wake up every day with the opportunity to express the artist within us. The art is our clothing, and varies based on our mood, our state of mind, and where our journey will take us that day.
Many people view their clothing choice on any given day as merely another decision they have to make to get through the day. Some see it as a necessary nuisance, others as an exciting moment when they get to gaze into a sea of colors and fabrics, and choose how they will express themselves that day. To the latter, it is deeply personal when it comes to adorning their bodies. It is all about coordinating colors, textures, expressing our soft side or our boldness, a masculine or feminine side, and doing so through our own unique lens.
Even those who scoff at fashion, style, and trends express their own sense of style, by default. Everyone has a sense of style. No one simply goes to a store, closes their eyes and grabs something off the rack or shelf and then buys it without any idea what they have just bought. They express their sense of style when they purchase clothing.
If someone says they don’t care about fashion or what they wear, I️ am always tempted to challenge them by saying, let me buy you a free outfit, but the catch is, you must wear in public whatever I️ buy. Most of those people would not agree to such uncertainty in what they will wear in public. Why? Because they see it as part of their identity and how others view them.
I find that even people who claim to be content wearing t-shirts and jeans, are particular about what type of t-shirt and what type of jeans they will wear. The truth is what we wear is a reflection of ourselves. It reveals what we like and don’t like, including colors, styles, how we perceive our body and how we choose to express those things to the world.
What we wear is also a reflection of our values and can reveal what is important to us. From hemlines to necklines, colors, and even types of fabrics, each says something about what you value, what is important to you. Fashion and style is an unspoken language. It reveals something about you, and speaks to those around you, without you ever having to say a word.
The definition of art is, “the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form...producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.” Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but starts in the mind of the one who imagines and expresses it. Fashion evokes feelings, emotions, and allows us to subtly express to the world everyday what those are. For better or worse, we all paint our canvas for the whole world to see each day. We know our clothes reveal something about us, and for that reason we choose to wear certain things based on how we see ourselves, and how we want others to see us.
So wake up, get up, dress up and reveal your inner artist to the world!
That’s all for now!
